Researchers can answer many of their questions using large datasets such as claims data, electronic health records (EHRs), and large research registries. However, securely acquiring, storing, and analyzing such large amounts of data can be costly and burdensome for individual researchers. To address this, the VCU Data Hub provides shared data access, storage and consultations to help researchers conduct large health data research.
With VCU Data Hub’s support, researchers can address research objectives such as identifying clinical interventions, analyzing policies, assessing changes due to natural conditions, addressing health disparities, understanding social determinants of health, and identifying evidence-based interventions.
Potential Knowledge Gained and Outcomes
VCU Data Hub’s goals are to:
- Grow population health-based research capacity by acquiring and sharing large datasets and expertise.
- Avoid duplication of data purchasing and fragmentation of data access.
- Use a purchasing and shared services cooperative model for cost-effective purchasing and housing of large data, information technology services and support, data access, and use of best data analytic practices.
- Emphasize urgency, efficiency and rapid delivery of data files (in addition to data security).
- Seek federal center training & research grants.
