Research
For students interested in research, we encourage you to visit the VCU School of Medicine’s Research for Medical Students webpage to find valuable resources and guidance on how to get involved in research projects within PM&R and across other departments at VCU.
Shadowing
We also offer opportunities for students to shadow members of our diverse and dedicated team in the following areas:
Students get to view the interdisciplinary approach to medical and functional management of hospitalized patients on our rehabilitation medicine units with diagnoses such as spinal cord injury, stroke, polytrauma and brain injury.
This is a chance to see a variety of follow-up patients with a variety of issues such as pain, limb loss and musculoskeletal disorders in VCU’s outpatient clinics.
Students can observe the outpatient treatment of patients with pain management issues through musculoskeletal exams and injection procedures.
At the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU, students can shadow pediatric PM&R physicians within their outpatient clinics treating young patients with diagnoses such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and juvenile arthritis.
We encourage medical students to attend faculty and resident didactic lectures on PM&R-related topics on Wednesday mornings.
Student Interest Group
Promoting opportunities for educational and clinical interactions with our department, VCU’s PM&R Student Interest Group has the following goals:
- Raise awareness of PM&R’s role in patient care
- Educate medical students on topics related to PM&R
- Create opportunities for student participation in PM&R activities
- Serve as a resource for students interested in pursuing careers in PM&R
